Vision Services

A diagnosis of legal blindness is not the “end of the road”, but the beginning of a new way of seeing and doing things by learning the techniques and strategies needed to maximize functional vision through vision rehabilitation services.

  • FALLS SAFETY ASSESSMENT

    AURORA is a partner in the Step Up to Stop Falls™ Community Coalition and conducts environmental evaluation in and around the home to determine the level of falls risk. Safety recommendations are made and assistance with minor modifications is provided.

  • FUNCTIONAL VISION ASSESSMENT

    A personalized and comprehensive assessment is conducted to determine functional vision and address issues of lighting, magnification, glare reduction and in-home management. Referrals are made to community resources as needed to assist with the ongoing management of vision loss.

  • TRAINING IN AIDS & DEVICES

    Adaptive equipment can improve function and support independence with everyday tasks. One to one training is available to learn how to use these tools. Devices include such things as lighted magnifiers, glare reduction lenses, special phones, talking items and tactile modifications.

  • INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES

    We provide instruction and guidance in areas of personal management, household management, communication, education, leisure activities, orientation and movement in the indoor environment, and use of low vision devices and training techniques; including the acquisition of adaptive equipment

  • ORIENTATION & MOBILITY TRAINING

    Instruction that can help you develop or relearn the skills and concepts you need to travel safely and independently within your home and in the community; including instruction in the use of a long cane, electronic travel devices, public transportation, sighted guide and pre-cane skills.

  • SOCIAL WORK

    Supportive short-term counseling to assist with emotional adjustment and coping with vision loss for individuals families and significant others. Includes support groups, and 1:1 consultation as well as referral to community resources such as financial, housing, medical or various entitlement, or benefit programs.

  • SUPPORT GROUPS FOR BLIND & VISUALLY IMPAIRED

    If you are having trouble learning to live with vision loss, or want to meet other people who are also dealing with vision related problems, a support group can be a valuable resource. Family and community members are also welcome to attend.

  • LOW VISION EYE CARE

    An on-site licensed Doctor of Optometry (O.D.), who is specially credentialed with additional clinical training in functional aspects of low-vision, provides a comprehensive functional visual evaluation and prescribes low vision optical devices to enhance the use of residual vision.
