How long have you been affiliated with Aurora of CNY and in what capacity?
I first became involved with Aurora in 1977 when I began working for the NYS Commission for the Blind as a Rehabilitation Counselor, and then later as District Manager. I retired in 2000 and was honored to be invited to join Aurora's Board. Since then, I have served on various committees, including Finance and Executive and also a previous term as Board President.
Why have you chosen to support AURORA?
Aurora consistently demonstrates integrity to its Mission of providing high quality services to individuals who are Blind, Visually Impaired, Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind, while always remaining alert for ways to improve and expand its range of services. Aurora also values, supports and recognizes the work of their staff in delivering these very specialized types of services. Aurora also advocates for, and empowers consumers to participate in the community in their manner of choice, and thereby helps to prevent individuals with these disabilities from being sidelined and forgotten. These are just some of the reasons I support Aurora.
What do you see as your greatest task as Board President?
First of all, I feel very fortunate that members of the Aurora Board are very committed to serving on this Board and have long demonstrated an ability and willingness to actively serve on the various committees as needed. And, I’m also grateful that we are very fortunate to have such an incredible Executive Director, Debra Chaiken, who has always been committed to working closely with the Board.
It’s hard to choose, but I think my greatest task will be keeping the Board focused on helping to achieve the goals contained in the 2022 Board Strategic Plan.
What is your vision for the future of AURORA's services?
My vision is that Aurora will continue to successfully adapt to change as needed in order to develop and provide quality services for their consumers.
